Independent presidential candidate Fred Mwesigye has condemned acts of violence that rocked several parts of the country following the arrest of National Unity Platform (NUP) presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi on Wednesday.

"I sympathize with all individuals who have been hurt, lost property or lives during this chaotic situation in different parts of the country. I am for the spirit of brotherhood, unity, tolerance, forgiveness and love," Mwesigye said in a statement.

"I condemn all acts of violence, whether by the security forces, political actors or ordinary citizens. That is why I call for change in our politics. Let our politics be guided by the spirit of love and the fear of God," he added.

At least seven people have died and 40 injured after protests erupted in Uganda following the arrest of Kyagulanyi.

Protestors in Kampala city and some parts of the country blocked roads and burned tyres, while police and the military responded by firing tear gas and live bullets.
