Sebastian Oderekong, a youth leader, said they want leaders who will support the youth groups to benefit from government programmes and create employment for them.

Residents of Morukatipe sub-county in Tororo district have demanded that their next Members of Parliament should lobby for better roads, extension of piped water and support burial fundraising groups.

Morukatipe village LC1 chairperson Vincent Omwen said they are tired of drinking unsafe water, which has resulted in increased waterborne disease infections.

Sebastian Oderekong, a youth leader, said they want leaders who will support the youth groups to benefit from government programmes and create employment for them.

Stephen Okame, the secretary of the Teso Joint Fundraising Association, wants leaders who will help their association with tents, chairs, saucepans, a vehicle and a public address system to support them during funerals.

Okame said since they formed burial groups four years ago, they have saved many families from selling property in the name of footing burial expenses.

The concerns were raised on Thursday (November 12, 2020) during the official launch of the campaign manifesto by mineral development state minister Sarah Achieng Opendi at Morukatipe sub-county.

Opendi said her focus in Parliament will be based on partnering with the Government to attract investors to create jobs in Tororo.

Opendi, also the Tororo Woman MP, is seeking re-election, this time on the NRM ticket.

She said Tororo, being a mineral-rich district, is bound to be an investment destination in terms of factory development.

She urged the parents to support Tororo Opendi is contesting against Rose Mary Abbo of the Forum for Democratic Change, Ayo Jacinta (independent), Sarah Abwin (independent) and Diana Ojaka (independent).

Meanwhile, the residents of Angolol parish in the same sub-county have appealed to their leaders to address the challenge of bad road network, lack of piped water and electricity.

The LC1 chairperson of Amoni village, Christopher Okitwi, said they cannot afford to continue hosting the main National Water and Sewerage Corporation water treatment plant feeding Tororo town, Malaba and Busia yet they use unsafe water from the springs and River Malaba.

Speaking during the campaign rally organised by the area MP, Fredrick Angura on Saturday (November 14, 2020) the residents also appealed for the establishment of a school to save children from travelling a long distance to Oriyoi Primary School, which is about four kilometres away.
