Kampala Central Lions club on Tuesday donated items worth sh2m to the Salvation Army-Home of Joy Orphan's centre in Wandegeya.

The items included 50 bags of sugar and rice, matooke, 50 boxes of washing soap, cartons of soda and biscuits as well as 50 kg of salt.

The support was aimed at getting home go through hardships from the COVID-19 lockdown.

Speaking after handing over the items, Lydia Ibingira, the president Kampala Central Lions Club said that they decided to the items to the center due to the fact that it has been hit by COVID-19 and to help children with special needs and disabilities.

"We wanted to give the little we have as Kampala Central Lions Club to help the children go through this difficult time," Ibingira noted.

Ibingira who was accompanied by Sedrace Rwekikiga the District 411B governor participated in feeding the children.

Gorreti Joita the caretaker of the orphan centre applauded Lion's Club for the help and called on Good Samaritans to pick a leaf.

She noted that the home has about 16 orphans under their care at the moment and they only depend on donations from small groups of people especially Rotarians.

"Due to the COVID-19 restrictions that were imposed by the government of Uganda to curb the deadly pandemic, most people who used to bring us donations were stopped from accessing our premises and it was hard to run the institution," Joita explained.

Before visiting the orphan's centre in Wandegeya, the club first planted three trees and hedges around the Kampala Central Lions Leisure Park at Makerere University.

"We pledged to take care of this park 10 years back and we put chairs for students to sit on while reading their books as they enjoy the fresh conducive environment," said Ibingira.
