Cranes midfielder Tony Mawejje says he is not surprised that he has returned to the national team setup.

The Police FC skipper who last featured for the Uganda Cranes in January 2017 against Mali at the African Cup of Nations, is currently part of the 22 locally-based players training in preparation for the double-header against South Sudan.

"I am glad that I have returned to the national team setup. It seems a surprise to many but I expected it. I am in the best shape to deliver like before. My role is to train, follow instructions and the technical team does the selection. My vast experience with the national team has to create an impact," noted Mawejje.

Mawejje who made his debut for the national team in 2008 in a 3-1 defeat away to Mauritius decided to return to Police a few months ago for another spell with the club.

One of the key positions coach Jonathan McKinstry hopes to fill is the defense.

Out of all the available centre backs, it is only Timothy Awany who plays regular football at his club Ashdod SC in Israel.

The other would be available defender is Bevis Mugabi but he is just returning from an injury at his club Motherwell in Scotland.

This means that some defenders in the squad stand a chance of making it to the final team.

The locally-based squad began training on Monday at Lugogo to be concluded on Sunday where five or six players will be selected to join the foreign-based legion.

Uganda will take on South Sudan on November 12 at St Mary's Stadium, Kitende, and four days later in Nairobi.
