HOMES & CONSTRUCTION

A patio can be a great showpiece for your home and a welcoming extension of the house.

You don't have to confine the family indoors.  The patio invites them to relax and enjoy the outdoors!

Bruce Joshua Twinomurinzi a landscaper with Divine landscapes defines a patio as a paved outdoor area adjoining the main house.

Mariah Kiwagama, another landscaper says, a patio can provide space for dining, entertainment and a relaxation spot. It can also be a kids' playground.

Pimp it up into a comfortable arena depending on your budget and how you want to use this space.

A getaway patio can be a good relaxation spot

Add appropriate furniture and accessories including rugs, throw pillows, and string lights.

Where there is no shade, put a large umbrella that can be moved where needed.

"You can also add a fountain or water feature to your patio, put containers with colorful plants and use creative lighting to brighten up space," Kiwagama shares.

There are even weatherproof floor and table lamps that will bring a stylish look.

Aside from that, solar-powered accent lights or low-voltage lights not only add drama and interest to the landscape but they will help you cut the power bills.

How to design it

In case you don't have a patio, it's easy to design one.

Twinomurinzi suggests you look at the space you have and determine the appropriate size and shape to come up with.

Start by sketching up a plan and define the different activity zones within the space.

Decide whether your patio will be a dining and relaxing spot or an entertainment arena and getaway space. This calls for different sizes of furniture and lay out.

In other words, you don't have to build a large patio when you don't expect to throw large parties outside.

If you want a quiet, private patio for your small family, then a small patio is the way to go.

In the kitchen corner, add a grill, island or countertop, a fridge, sink and storage. This will make outdoor cooking fun.

A patio is different from a porch

Both are outdoor spaces but completely different. Many people find them hard to differentiate.

A porch is usually constructed at the entryway and attached to the house. It may be roofed or left open. On the other hand, a patio is constructed on the ground directly besides or slightly away from the house.
