FLOODS

Several farmers in three villages in Bufunda division, Ibanda municipality are counting losses following floods and hail storms that ravaged the area on Monday (October 26, 2020).

The floods followed a heavy downpour with thunderstorms in Nyanga, Nyabwegarika and Ruyonja villages.

The most affected village is Nyanga. All the affected villages are on the lower slopes of Bwahwa hills.

The most affected crops are bananas, coffee, peas, millet and cassava.

Millet gardens were not spared either

Winnie Nayera, a farmer in Nyanga, said she lost two acres of maize to the floods.

Apollo Kibeherere, the Ibanda municipality mayor, said the municipal council authorities were compiling an assessment report to submit it to the Office of the Prime Minister for relief to the affected families.

Many household items were destroyed and some residents were forced to seek shelter elsewhere after flooding of their houses.

Godwin Muhumuza, the Bufunda division LC5 councillor, said there is a public outcry in the area because of the destruction caused by the floods.

"Part of Nyanga village is hilly, while the rest is in a low-lying area, which makes it prone to floods. Farmers here do not have any choice but to wait for the water to dry," he said.

Vincent Magezi, the municipal agriculture officer, blamed the local population for failing to conserve the environment.

He said residents do not want to plant trees.
