Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, young people who lost jobs have lost a sense of direction

Rotaract Ladies Initiative has started a mentorship programme in order to empower youth for sustainable development.

The programme aims to train over 3,000 youth per year. Currently, the programme has 500 youth undergoing general training, 300 involved in inter-personal training while 150 are involved in skilling training.

Under the mentorship, youth will acquire skills and knowledge in leadership, public speaking, career development, financial literacy, family health, counselling, fashion and design, among others.

Speaking to the trainees during the launch of the FutureMe mentorship and skilling programme at the Ministry of Information and Communications Technology (ICT), headquarters in Kampala recently, Immaculate Owomugisha, the chairperson of the Rotaract Ladies Initiative, said: "We first identify what you want to learn, which skills you want to achieve and tailor programmes to match your needs."

Because of COVID-19 pandemic, Owomugisha said young people who lost jobs have lost a sense of direction.

"If you completed Senior Four, Senior Six or graduated from university and want to get mentorship, we shall guide you into making the right decision. Besides that, after the training, if we get money, we shall avail you with capital to start your own business," Owomugisha said.

Since mentorship costs time and money, Rosetti Nabbumba, the district governor Rotary District 9211, said any youth who wished enrol for the programme must commit to study.

Nabbumba said the selection of the youth to join the programme will be based on their need.

"We are working on the mindset of the youth to become more productive and also develop their own inner self to tap into the employment sector and also become leaders in whatever sphere they choose." Nabbumba said.
