Rape suspect shot dead

According to police, Ambayo was on Thursday (October 22, 2020) shot dead as he attempted to disarm officers who were effecting his arrest, having reported him for rape.

KAMPALA - A security guard who allegedly raped a woman on Wednesday has been shot dead, the Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson, Patrick Onyango has said.

Ali Ambayo, a private security guard at a garage near Kosovo junction, was a resident of Lugala, Lubaga division in Kampala district.

According to police, Ambayo was on Thursday (October 22, 2020) shot dead as he attempted to disarm officers who were effecting his arrest, having reported him for rape.

"The rape victim, whose name we will not disclose for privacy narrated to police the ordeal and she identified the suspect.

On effecting the arrest, Ambayo resisted and attempted to grab a gun from one of the officers, therefore, firing bullets that killed him instantly," Onyango said.

Onyango revealed that when the rape case was filed, police detectives retrieved nearby CCTV footage. On analysing it, they discovered that Ambayo (deceased) was the suspect.

"A team of detectives has visited the crime scene, the body has been taken to the city mortuary at Mulago Hospital for postmortem and the officer who shot has been arrested and detained at Old Kampala Police Station as investigations continue," he said.

Onyango appealed to members of the public to always cooperate with police officers as they do their duties and not to resist arrest.
