Universities given two weeks to address fees issues

Students have requested that the government gives universities a stimulus financial package and also remove the taxes.

KAMPALA - Parliament has given universities two weeks to address issues raised by students on fees reductions.

In a joint meeting between university students and ministers of Finance and Education on Wednesday, the team agreed that the issues raised by students are policy and administrative and therefore requires consultation.

The Minister of State for Higher Education, Dr John Chrysostom Muyingo informed the meeting that he had not received the petition. "Let us go back and look at all these issues and harmonise them because they are important and need consultation," Muyingo said.

The students from all public and private universities petitioned the Speaker of Parliament to intervene and make universities reduce on the fees to be paid, be given favourable payment programs where they would be allowed to pay even after sitting exams.

The students also requested that the government gives universities a stimulus financial package and also remove the taxes.

Makerere University Vice-Chancellor, Prof Barnabas Nawangwe said the University Council is expected to meet this week and will present the students' requests.
