Police on Saturday used teargas to disperse Mbogo clan members

The Police have apologised to Buganda over an incident in Mityana district in which officers fired teargas to disperse a Mbogo clan meeting over the weekend.

Katikiiro Charles Peter Mayiga who accepted the apology however demanded disciplinary action against the commander of the incident.

"I express our pleasure to the top Police team for sending you here to apologise over the Saturday incident. Being remorseful is a gentlemanly act. However, the officer ought to be punished for being disrespectful towards religious and clan beliefs," Mayiga said.

Mayiga made the remarks on Wednesday in a meeting with senior Police officers led by the forces' Political Commissar Asan Kasingye at Bulange-Mengo in Kampala.

Kasingye, on Tuesday also visited retired Masaka Diocesan Bishop John Baptist Kaggwa, to apologise over an incident where the clergy was invited to officiate.

Police on Saturday used teargas to disperse clan members who had convened at their ancestral site at Mugulu in Ziggoti Town Council to attend a thanksgiving prayer for their leader, Gajuule Kayiira Kasibante.

Kasibante served as head of Buganda's 52 clans for seven years until recently when Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II replaced him with Omutaka Namwama Augustine Nsereko.
