ELECTION WATCH | MAWOKOTA NORTH

Trade and industry minister Amelia Kyambadde has always used Hilary Kiyagga aka Dr Hilderman's Amelia song to excite voters in Mawokota North.

However, the singer himself has turned up to wrestle Kyambadde out of the seat.

Apart from Kiyagga, two more people have come up to challenge Kyambadde — Democratic Party's David Mayinja Tebusweke and Zumula Mugwanya, son of former MP for Mawokota North, Patrick Zumula Mugwanya.

Kyambadde, after nomination, promised to increase service delivery and promote government programmes geared towards improving people's livelihoods.

The Electoral Commission nominated 15 candidates in Mpigi to contest for three parliamentary positions in the district.

These include Mawokota North constituency, currently represented by Kyambadde, Mawokota South, represented by John Bosco Lubyayi Sseguya, who lost to Suzan Nakawuki Nsambu in the NRM primaries, and district Woman MP (Sarah Nakawunde Temulanda) of the NRM is the incumbent. Flavia Mujulizi, the Mpigi district returning officer, said the exercise was peaceful.

The Police publicist for Katonga region, Lydia Tumushabe, said in Mawokota South, they fired teargas to disperse supporters of aspirants who wanted to hold processions.

Gomba district

The Gomba district returning officer, Charles Joel Mugenyi, also registered nine aspirants to contest for three parliamentary positions in the district.

The exercise took place at Gomba saza headquarters and all candidates were supposed to first wash their hands and put on face masks before accessing the nomination room.

Wilberforce Kaggwa, who lost to Robinah Rwakoojo in the Gomba West NRM primaries, was nominated as an independent.

Speaking shortly after nomination, Kaggwa said his victory in the primaries was stolen and his efforts to seek justice from the party appeals tribunal were not successful.

Kaggwa also held processions in different parts of the constituency, waving to his supporters.
