REOPENING OF SCHOOLS

KIBAALA- Over 400 private and government-aided primary and secondary schools in the Greater Kibaale district have been issued with certificates of compliance to re-open for the second term.

Kyaboona said most schools visited had complied with the guidelines.

Kyaboona said the district education department and district COVID-19 task force will not allow any school to operate without the required protective equipment.

"Protective equipment will be a password for re-opening of schools and any institution that will not heed to the above guidelines will be forced to close,'' he said.

Dr Emely Kugonza, the director of St Mary's Primary School Karuguuza and Kaisenkerere Primary School, said they have enough facilities to reopen.

George Irumba, the headteacher of Buyanja Secondary School, said the Government should release enough funds early enough to enable headteachers to purchase the basic requirements.

Mary Kyofuna, the Kakumiro district inspector of schools, said at least 130 out of over 200 primary and secondary schools had complied with the education and health ministry guidelines and were issued with certificates of compliance.

She, however, clarified that some private schools had not met the basic requirements for COVID-19 prevention such as temperature guns, foot operating handwashing facilities and were at risk of not re-opening.

In Kagadi, over 200 government-aided and private primary and secondary schools out of over 400 schools had been supervised and issued with certificates of compliance, according to Julius Alinda, the district inspector of schools.

Sebastian Ssemakula, the headteacher of Kagadi Secondary School, was happy with the decision to re-open schools.

"I have enough classrooms to accommodate over 300 Senior Four candidates and about 90 Senior Six candidates. I appeal to parents to send their children on time with at least three face masks and we shall ensure compliance at the entrance," he said.

Peter Alinda, the deputy headteacher Bunyoro Secondary School, said the Government should provide support to private schools by donating basic COVID-19 preventive items such as temperature guns as well as giving private teachers financial support.

Christian Ankunzire, a private secondary school teacher, said: "The Government should think about private teachers who are not on payroll.
