REOPENING OF SCHOOL

In Maracha district, only 55 educational institutions met the requirements to re-open.

A team from the education ministry recently visited the schools to issue guidelines on how to re-open amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

This was confirmed by Flavia Osoa, the district education officer.

The team found that only three schools had temperature guns by the time of inspection out of 50 visited. About 75% of the 80 schools do not have staff trained on COVID-19 related issues.

Osoa said tertiary institutions that are set to open include Obustava and St Lawrence Anyivu vocational schools.

Dr Paul Onzubo, the district health officer, expressed worry over the financial status of the schools in sustaining the standard operating procedures.

Osoa said the district had received sh1.5m to enable every government-aided school to implement standard operating procedures.

The primary schools trailing behind the bar line and recommended for improvement include Kanasia Community 43%, Retriko at 44%, Paranga at 49% and Paradise at 49%.

Secondary schools that were cleared are Maracha High School and Victory Secondary School.

The headteacher of Paradise Nursery and Primary School, Ronnie Afema, acknowledged receiving a copy of the report about the missing gaps in the school.

He said parents in their meeting held on Tuesday, committed themselves to fulfilling some of requirements.
