The rains, which lasted over three hours and were characterised by strong winds and hailstones, also destroyed about 200 acres of banana and cassava plantations.

A total of 45 families in Nambale sub-county, Iganga district, have been left homeless after roofs of their houses were blown off during a heavy downpour on Monday.

The rains, which lasted over three hours and were characterised by strong winds and hailstones, also destroyed about 200 acres of banana and cassava plantations.

The roof of a three classroom block at Muira Primary School was also blown off during the rain.

The chairman of the school management committee, James Batanya, appealed to the Government to renovate the school ahead of the re-opening of schools.

The deputy headteacher, George Taitika, said vital documents such as textbooks and registration forms for Primary Seven candidates were also destroyed after being soaked in the rainwater.

The affected building also serves as the main administration block for the school.

The Muira LC1 chairperson, Peter Musuulo, said residents are likely to be hit by famine since the majority rely on farming.

The LC3 councillor for Muira parish, Jane Balidawa, said the affected families are in urgent need of food, shelter, medicine and clothings.

Balidawa said household property such as mattresses, clothes and electrical gadgets were destroyed.

The Iganga LC5 chairperson, Patrick Kayemba, said the district disaster committee is to soon travel to the area to assess the extent of the damage.
