Rukungiri mob lynches mentally unstable man over boy's murder

The village chairperson, Winnie Kembabazi, said the residents suspected Rwakaliba Turinawe of hitting 15-year-old Ezra Owamukama with a hoe on the head thrice.

Angry residents of Kabyooya village in Kazindiiro parish, Bugangari sub-county in Rukungiri district, have killed a 48-year-old mentally unstable man over suspicion of ending the life of a young boy.

The village chairperson, Winnie Kembabazi, said the residents suspected Rwakaliba Turinawe of hitting 15-year-old Ezra Owamukama with a hoe on the head thrice.

"When he hit Owamukama on the head with the hoe, he fell down and became unconscious," Kembabazi said.

The Kigezi Regional Police Spokesperson, Elly Maate, told New Vision that the victim was pronounced dead on arrival by medics at Nyakibale Hospital, where he had been rushed for treatment.

"When the residents received the news about the demise of the victim, they immediately mounted a hunt for the suspect until they got him and lynched him," said Maate.

Police added that the two bodies were later taken to Rwakabengo Health Centre III mortuary.

As investigations continue, the Police said they had arrested three suspects for interrogation in relation to the mob action.
