With the increasing cases of COVID-19, the Uganda Police Force has warned motorists against flouting of the COVID-19 guidelines.

The police force's mouth piece, Fred Enanga said they have realised a blatant disregard of the guidelines by both boda boda riders and other motorists.

"I think this must stop. We urged motorists to follow guidelines as set by the Ministry of Health to stop the spread of the epidemic," he said.

According to the Ministry of Health statistics, Uganda has a cumulative 7,777 confirmed cases of COVID-19 with 75 deaths.

While addressing journalists at the Uganda Media Centre in Kampala, Enanga said police together with other security forces are to resume full scale operations to ensure that the guidelines are followed.

"Cars move up to 11:00pm and boda bodas even to around 10:00pm and even beyond. Boda boda riders drive under the cover of darkness trying to elude security personnel which puts the life of passengers at risk," he added.

Enanga stressed that the epidemic is now spreading to rural areas which was not the case before.

"We just want Ugandans to follow the standard operating procedures. We are seeing a more increase in wearing face masks which is good. But a mask alone cannot save you; we need to follow social distancing, sanitizing and regularly handwashing," he noted.

MUK fire investigations

At the same briefing, Enanga said investigations into the cause of the double blaze at Makerere University main building is progressing on well.

The fire which started at around midnight on September 20, last week, razed down several offices on main building including the registry department.

He said police is on the hunt for two cleaners who were working in the same building and a Police Constable identified as Julius Kiwanuka who was manning the building.

He said the three went missing since the incident.

He said another team of investigating officers is also scrutinizing four different footages where they expect to get clues on the real cause of fire.
