Poor waste management is one of the challenges that the town council faces

The largest garbage site in Lyantonde town council was turned into a polling station for the LC3 flag-bearer positions for the National Resistance Movement (NRM). The garbage site is located in Kooki ward C.

This is the third time the voters turned up for elections at the same spot in three weeks.

But this time round, the voters could not bear the stench emitted from the garbage.

When voters arrived at the polling station, majority brought the issue of the garbage to the attention of the polling officials, but nothing was done about it.

According to Lillian Namanda, some voters abandoned the exercise because they could not bear the stench.

According to Francis Muhumuza, the vice chairperson for Kooki Ward C, they did not have a wide space for the elections and, therefore, opted for the site.

He added that the village has more than 2,800 people and that the garbage site was the only space, which could accommodate the many voters.

Adam Tusiimire, one of the NRM officials, confirmed receiving the complaints. He said he could not do much about it, since his duty was to monitor the voting.

Paul Ssekandi, one of the contestants, said poor waste management is one of the challenges that the town council faces.

Mustafa Kalule, the incumbent, said the garbage area was the perfect spot for elections due to its space.

He added that the amount of garbage at the site has reduced due to the routine collection by the council trucks.

Lyantonde town council is made up of Kaliiro A, Kakiiro B, Kooki C, Kooki D and Kijukizo A. Kooki ward C is the biggest of all, with a population of more than 2,800 people, according to the town council authorities.

The village is known for holding the most competitive elections in the town council and the results from this village largely determine a candidate's victory.
