Kagadi residents celebrate Twesige's victory

Business activities in Kagadi town council came to a standstill on Wednesday as jubilant residents welcomed and congratulated Steven Twesige upon trouncing seven Buyaga East contenders to become the NRM flag bearer for the Buyaga Parliamentary seat.


The jovial electorate who traversed the streets of Kagadi chanting Twesige's slogan ‘'KIHIKIRE'' but were later repulsed by Kagadi Police after converging in very large numbers as they accompanied him to his home Village in Kamata -Pacwa sub-county.

Dr. Tanga Odoi, the NRM Electoral Commission boss announced the long-awaited final results for the Buyaga East Constituency polls, declaring Steven Twesige Rurekele the winner and flag bearer for the Buyaga East Parliamentary seat. The results were announced at the NRM party offices in Kampala on Tuesday, September 15.

Twesige, the former third prime minister Bunyoro Kitara Kingdom, garnered 28,686 votes representing 42%  of the total votes cast while his closest rival Eric Musana Acaali, the incumbent MP Buyaga East polled 27,162 votes which represented 40% of the total votes cast. Peter Amara (incumbent Kibaale District LC5 Boss) who joined the race for Buyaga East Parliamentary seat scored 10,966 votes representing 15%. Others in the race included, Patrick Kakooza who polled 1,079 votes, Kerian Tukamushaba 367 votes, Robert Birungi Napoleon 33 votes,  Diini Kisembo polled 10 votes and Bright Alinaitwe scooped 385 votes.

On September 4, Eric Musana, the incumbent MP petitioned NRM party EC Boss Dr. Tanga Odoi over-inflating figures on declaration forms for Pacwa trading center polling station which he said indicated 1700 voters in favour of Twesige instead of only about 700 voters at the same polling station.

JC Mikisa Salongo, the Kagadi NRM party registrar was compelled on the same day by the two parties to submit the results to the NRM party electoral commission Chairperson for scrutiny until September 15, when Dr. Tanga Odoi declared the winner(Steven Twesige) who polled the highest number of the total votes cast in 13 sub-counties of Kagadi District.

On Monday, September 14, supporters of Eric Musana (incumbent Buyaga East) staged a demonstration with placards protesting a delay by NRM party EC to release results in favour of Musana but were quelled by the anti-riot police commanded by an officer- in -Charge operations Kagadi Police station, Peter Simon Aimai.
