Soldier accused of defrauding Total granted bail

WOII Gordon Kababure who was on June 8 remanded over obtaining money by false pretence and forgery was granted bail by the General Court Martial (GCM) sitting in Makindye on Monday.

KAMPALA - Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF) officer accused of defrauding Total Uganda of sh2.3b has been granted bail after spending close to three months on remand.

WOII Gordon Kababure who was on June 8 remanded over obtaining money by false pretence and forgery was granted bail by the General Court Martial (GCM) sitting in Makindye on Monday.

Chaired by Lt Gen Andrew Gutti, the court granted Kababure bail after his sureties (wife and brother) were presented before court.

Kababure who is attached to the Directorate of Logistics (Land Forces) headquarters in Bombo and a resident of Bwebajja village along Entebbe road in Wakiso District was charged with obtaining money by false pretence under section 305 of the Penal Code Act, Cap 120.
 
It is alleged that between July 2018 and July 2019, he falsely obtained sh2.3b from Total Uganda pretending that the money was for the routine fuel for the land forces.

Kababure was also accused of forgery under section 342 and 347 of the Penal Code Act, Cap 120. 

According to the charge sheet, between September and December 2018, he forged 13 fuel cards which he tendered before Total fuel Station Bwebajja to obtain funds for personal gain falsely pretending that the cards were authorized by the Commander of Land Forces, UPDF whereas they were not.
