The Electoral Commission (EC) has postponed the nominations for the local government positions, which had been scheduled to commence on Monday.

The commission's spokesperson, Paul Bukenya, told New Vision, Thursday, that the nominations have now been rescheduled to take place from September 21 to October 1.

Asked what motivated the postponement, Bukenya said: "There are many other activities we are currently implementing, including demarcation of electoral areas."

Demarcation of electoral areas

He said the ongoing demarcation of electoral areas was occasioned by the recent creation of new counties, cities and town councils.

"Parliament has in the recent past created 46 new counties, 10 cities, one district and five parliamentary seats for elderly persons. The Government also created 168 new town councils/sub-counties after our cut-off date for the creation of election areas," he added.

The EC is currently engaged in field activities for the demarcation of parliamentary constituencies and local government electoral areas as well as re-organising polling stations in the affected areas.

"The commission calls on all stakeholders in the electoral process to carefully study the changes and to participate as per the timelines and guidelines issued for the respective activities," Bukenya stated.

The nomination of candidates for parliamentary elections is scheduled to take place on October 12 and 13, and nominations for presidential candidates on November 2 and 3.
