FORT PORTAL - NRM supporters in Fort Portal City were in celebration on Wednesday, after the party won in the majority of the polling stations in the parish youth elections.

In Gweri parish in Fort Portal north division, Jackson Businge (NRM) garnered 36 votes, beating all the other three candidates — Fred Musiime, Julius Alinitwe and Gilbert Mwesige — for the position of chairperson.

The election that was conducted amid tight security was peaceful, apart from a few incidents that were reported at Rwengoma in Fort Portal central division and Mugoma in Fort Portal north division, where names of some voters were missing from the registers.

John Kusemererwa, the NRM party chairperson for Kabarole district, congratulated the NRM candidates that won the elections, saying he was optimistic that at the next level of sub-counties, NRM would also take the lion's share.

William Kasigazi Donanto, the NRM party publicity secretary for Kabarole, said the polls went on peacefully because many NRM youth who participated were organised.

"We did not have any violence in Fort Portal City and many parts of Kabarole, because our youths were organised. That is why we have managed to win all the seats, both in the city and in the district," Kasigazi said.

He added that they have embarked on mobilising NRM youth to get prepared for the next set of elections at the sub county level.
