NCHE clears Victoria University to conduct online classes

Last March, the government ordered the closure of all educational institutions to help curb the spread of coronavirus that has disrupted normal life around the world.

The National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) has cleared Victoria University to conduct online classes for students who have been away from school for six months over the COVID-19 pandemic.

In an August 31, 2020 letter to the university vice-chancellor, the NCHE Executive Director, Prof.Mary Okwakol said the institution is free to start conducting online classes for 12 months or the duration of the Coronavirus pandemic as will be determined by relevant authorities.

"I'm pleased to inform you that after due consideration, the National Council for Higher Education granted you permission to roll out Open, Distance, and E-learning for the attached programs," Okwakol said.

"However, you may apply for a renewal of the permission at least two months before the expiry of the 12 months, if necessary."

There are 21 other universities in the queue awaiting clearance.

The first to be cleared ae Victoria University, ISBAT University, Cavendish, Makerere University, and the Law Development Centre.

In July, the NCHE issued guidelines for Higher Education Institutions (HEI) to roll out the distance and electronic learning.
