Contractors working on the Kampala Institutional and Infrastructure Development Project (KIIDP II), have been given up to December 2020 to complete works on the roads.

The Deputy Executive Director Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) Eng. David Luyimbazi while inspecting road works under KIIDP II, on Friday told the contractors that the public has been inconvenienced due to the slow progress on the works.

He was accompanied by the KCCA Eng. Andrew Kitaka and the KIIDP II project coordinator Charles Tumwebaze, city engineers, and the Kampala Resident City Commissioner, Farida Mpiima.

Luyimbazi told the contractors and consultants to work as a team and work during the night to speed up the process if they have to maintain their working relationship.

The project was supposed to have completed works on the roads in December 2019, however an extension was given up to July 2020. Some of the roads have been tarmacked while others are incomplete.

The contractors however, said they were disturbed by the three months lockdown since the workers like the truck drivers could not access their work place as there was no transport.

The resident engineer UB consultants, Gianjarco Dall Aqu said they have faced challenges from the communities saying that members of the community especially business owners resist the development.

"We need the co-operation from the business owners, some of them stop us from working in front of their businesses," Dall said.

Tumwebaze explained that they started engaging the communities in 2016, adding that they were told of the economic benefits of the project.

He said that some member of the community gave out the land for the development of the project.
