KAMPALA - A group of 42 workmates from Parliament yesterday donated sh3.7m to support Dinah Babirye's surgery. Babirye was burnt while cooking at her kiosk in Kamuli district.

The group, that was led by research officer Esther Namugojji, information officer Simon Mugisha, statistician Boniface Okuda and information officer Evelyn Angiji, said they were touched by Babirye's story and decided to contribute towards her surgery.

Tripped and fell

Babirye, 29, a mother of three, suffered severe injuries while cooking in a small kiosk in Kanange, Ngalomwenda trading centre in Kamuli Municipality after she tripped and fell into a saucepan of boiling beans.  Her hands were severely burnt.

Babirye, who was a food vendor, can no longer support herself following the accident that happened on October 29, 2019.

Namugojji said they were touched by Babirye's story that was published on the New Vision online platforms.

Mugisha called on other people who can support Babirye to come forward and lend a hand.

"I know times are tough because of COVID-19, but we should not stop to help," Mugisha said.

While receiving the money yesterday at the New Vision head offices in Industrial Area, Kampala, News and Current Affairs' hub head, Felix Osike, thanked the group for leading by example.

Hospital to cover the rest

New Vision corporate social responsibility coordinator, Joseph Banyu, said Babirye was referred to CoRSU, a private rehabilitation hospital for surgery.

"She will need three operations at a cost of about sh7m," he said.

CoRSU chief executive director Davide Naggi, however, said the hospital had subsidised the cost by sh3.5m.

"We are happy to partner with the New Vision and we have committed sh3.5m to improve Babirye's condition," he said

The New Vision deputy regional editor, Hope Mafaranga, also thanked the Good Samaritans.

She said New Vision has been supporting such causes as the company's core responsibility of advancing society.
