The LRA, led by Joseph Kony, terrorised northern Uganda for over 20 years in a brutal war that left thousands dead and forced the Acholi people into IDP camps.
TODAY IN HISTORY (August 25, 2006)
Peace teams of rebels of the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) and the Government of Uganda arrived at Juba-Raha Hotel in high spirits, to sign the cessation of hostilities pact. This was after the Government gave the LRA 14 days to assemble at designated points in South Sudan as part of the bargain in the cessation of hostilities agreement that was to be signed in Juba.
The Ugandan team was headed by Dr Ruhakana Rugunda, while the LRA delegation was led by Martin Ojul. The chief mediator was current South Sudan vice-president Dr Riek Machar.
