“A lockdown is desirable, but no longer available to us. We are now on our own. I have been telling people to work on their immunity. This is the best option right now."

The former FDC Presidential candidate, Dr. Kizza Besigye has advised against a proposal to lockdown the country again due to the spread of coronavirus.

He insists that lockdown is no longer a solution to Uganda's COVID-19 problem.

The country has experienced an increase in the COVID-19 cases in the last few days. For instance, on Saturday a lone, the country recorded 318 cases.

According to the health ministry's communication on Monday, 99 cases were registered taking the country tally to 2,362 cases.

The Kampala ministry last week warned that a localized lockdown may be imposed over Kampala, as the capital emerges as the epicenter of the disease spread.

Speaking on a local television on Monday, Besigye blamed the eruption of the disease to mismanagement.

Besigye who has since indicated that he will not seek re-election in 2021 instead advised Ugandans to focus on boosting their body immunity and follow guidelines on social distancing.

"A lockdown is desirable, but no longer available to us. We are now on our own. I have been telling people to work on their immunity. This is the best option right now," he said.

Besigye said, "We made a good decision to lockdown early. Unfortunately, everybody was locked except trucks that are the best mode of dissemination. This was a fundamental mistake."

In a press statement over weekend, the ICT and National Guidance Minister, Judith Nabakooba indicated that it was not in the governments best interest to announce another lockdown but they might be forced to if circumstances dictate.

President Yoweri Museveni is expected to address the country on the Coronavirus situation this week, amidst the surge of the cases.
