During an exquisite but restrained ceremony held at foreign affairs ministry on Friday, Uganda's foreign affairs minister Sam Kutesa welcomed Germany's new ambassador to Uganda Matthias Gottlob Schauer who presented copies of his credentials.

Kutesa congratulated Shauer upon his appointment and being posted to Uganda.

He noted that the new appointment will strengthen the bilateral relations between Uganda and Germany especially in trade promotion and investment between both countries.

Kutesa did not forget to thank the Federal Republic of Germany for the support extended to Uganda in the water, energy and governance sectors. He further appealed for increased economic diplomacy ties between the two countries.

While presenting copies of his credentials Schauer conveyed a message of gratitude for the warm reception.

In response to Kutesa's appeal, the ambassador expressed the desire to continue working closely with the ministry of foreign affairs to enhance economic diplomacy through the exchange of visits of business delegations, which will create business-to-business linkages between the two countries.

Kutesa promised that the ministry will accord the ambassador-designate all the necessary assistance required to accomplish his assignments during his tour of duty.

Schauer was born on April 18, 1960, in Switzerland before shifting to Germany years later. He studied law and diplomacy among other disciplines.

He worked at several Germany foreign offices including that of Seoul in South Korea between 1992-1995. He was also Germany's permanent representative to the European Union between 1999-2003 before taking up a related office as a Germany permanent representative to the United Nations between 2007-2010.

Prior to his posting to Uganda, Schauer was the deputy head of mission at the Germany embassy in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia between 2016 and 2020.
