The Ibanda Magistrate's Court has remanded a waitress to Nyabuhikye Prison over allegedly dumping her newborn child into a pitlatrine, leading to its death.

Court heard that on July 29, Promise Nowomugisha, 23, from Katete in Mbarara, dumped the baby into a pitlatrine in Ibanda town shortly after birth.

The suspect is charged with infanticide as per section 213 of the Penal Code Act.

Nowomugisha will face life imprisonment if found guilty. The Ibanda Chief Magistrate, Moses Kagoda, did not allow her to enter plea as the offence is of capital nature, only tried by the High Court.

The suspect will reappear in court on September 1, when her case comes up for mention.
