Following an accident on Lake Bunyonyi in Kabale district that claimed three people, finance state minister for planning David Bahati said only ferries will solve such tragedies.

Three people died in a canoe accident on the lake after being hit by a strong wave on Tuesday.

In his condolence message, Bahati who is also Ndorwa West MP, said the accidents were likely to continue if ferries were not provided on the lake.

"I learnt with great sadness the tragedy of the untimely death, by drowning in Lake Bunyonyi, of three young people from Butanda sub-county, Ndorwa County West on Tuesday," Bahati said.

The three young people were among those who were coming from civic duty when tragedy befell them.

"This, and other tragedies that have taken place in Lake Bunyonyi, are some of the reasons we have consistently pushed for the deployment of ferries on the lake to provide more safe transport for our people," the minister added.

New Vision reported last year that many school-going children around Lake Bunyonyi were losing their lives as they used canoes to access education.

Many other people have also died as a result of drowning while using dangerous canoes on the lake.
