Mobile money operator remanded over sh50m theft

Prosecution alleges that on March 4, 2020 at Stanbic Bank, Nakivubo branch in Kampala district, Mutagaya and others still at large stole cash sh50m.

KAMPALA - A25-year-old mobile money operator has been charged and remanded to Kitalya Prison for allegedly stealing sh50m, the property of Stanbic Bank.

Isma Mutagaya, a resident of Njababona village, Nakiswiga Parish, Nabwampiti Sub County in Luuka district has been charged with theft, an offence contrary to section 254 (1) and 261 of the Penal Code Act.

Grade One Magistrate, Doreen Olga Karungi of the Buganda Road Chief Magistrates' Court in Kampala read him the charges. He denied having committed the same.

On denying the charge, the prosecution led by Barbra Kyomugisha informed the court that inquiries were still ongoing, prompting court to adjourn the case to August 25, 2020.

"Since you don't admit to the charges, be remanded to Kitalya Prisons until August 25, as we give the state time to complete their investigations," Karungi ruled.
