Three killed by alcohol in Rukungiri

At least three people are reported to have died as a result of taking excessive alcohol, in different parts of Rukungiri district, in a space of one week.

On July 31, Julius Twesigye, 64, a resident of Kamujegye cell, Rwerere parish in Rwerere Town Council, Rukungiri district, allegedly took excess alcohol while he had gone to Justus Mbuyani's home, his friend.

The next day, Twesigye, passed on and his body was found lying in a small eucalyptus trees forest, located a stone-throw away from Mbuyani's residence.

Kigezi Regional Police spokesperson, Elly Maate, told New Vision, that the deceased's body was later taken to Rwakabengo Health Centre III mortuary pending a postmortem.

"Three suspects have so far been arrested to assist in investigations as inquiries into the matter continue," he said.

A day before, on July 30, Herbert Mugabe, a fishmonger, and resident of Bwambara sub-county, also passed on after taking alcohol.

His body was found in the sitting room and the door locked from inside by the area local authorities who were led by local council one chairperson Willy Kabudogo.

On the same day, at around 7pm, Timothy Karenzi Amooti, 46, was found dead in his bedroom by his colleague Allan Nabimanya. 

However, some residents have attributed the increasing cases of sudden death as a result of boozing, to prolonged COVID-19 lockdown.
