UPL teams to share sh120m for 2019/20 season

Jul 24, 2020

The least amount of money spent by clubs every season in the Uganda Premier League is approximately sh300m

FUFA has released sh120m as the prize money for the 2019/20 Uganda Premier League that ended prematurely due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

Champions Vipers walked away with the biggest share with sh60m followed by KCCA FC who received sh20m. Tooro United that finished bottom walked away with only sh500,000.

Taking a look at the amount of money clubs spend every season in terms of paying salaries and allowances among other things, the prize money pales in comparison. Each club gets sh75m every season from league sponsors StarTimes and it trickles in quarterly.

Last season, clubs only managed to receive three quarters the purse and there was uncertainty whether they'd receive the final quarter. However, StarTimes indicated that if the league was not going to be concluded, they were unlikely to release the funds.

The least amount of money spent by clubs every season in the Uganda Premier League is approximately sh300m, while clubs like KCCA FC and Vipers spend over sh1b every season and this escalates when they compete on the continent.
