Man suspected of assaulting policeman surrenders

A bodaboda rider who assaulted two traffic officers in Lira on Saturday has surrendered to the Police at Lira Central Police Station.

The video of the scuffle went viral showing two men in scuffle with two traffic officers.

Michael Odongo, the regional Police spokesperson says the two men were stopped by the Police for flouting presidential directives on fighting COVID- 19 by carrying a passenger but they turned on the officers and started assaulting them.

He said that at the time, Victor Omodo the passenger was apprehended but the rider took off.

The rider, Solomon Owiny Odoc on Wednesday reported to the Police accompanied by his clan leader and apologised.

He was however made to write a statement and detained. Odongo says the file has been submitted to the Resident State Attorney for advice.

Another Police officer was last week assaulted and lost his teeth. Odongo says the suspect in this case, Polycap Omara, has also been arrested and charged with causing grievous harm.

Odongo discouraged civilians from attacking Police officers and urged whoever has grievances to channel it to the relevant authorities
