Cabinet passes resolution to have five MPs representing elderly

Cabinet has passed a resolution to allow the elderly have parliamentary representatives.

According to ICT minister Judith Nabakooba, Cabinet sitting on Monday agreed that the elderly be represented by five MPs.

"For the elderly, Cabinet passed their request to be considered for representation in Parliament," Nabakooba told New Vision on Tuesday.

She said like the youth, workers and persons with disabilities' representatives, the elderly will have regional representatives as well as national ones, but taking into consideration gender balance.

Asked about the next step of action, Nabakooba said: "I guess the process begins with Parliament."

"Article 32 of the Constitution provides for the State to take affirmative action in favour of marginalised groups. There is need for inclusive representation of older persons in key decision making positions at local and national level for responsiveness of their needs," the minister added.

So far Uganda's Parliament has more than 400 MPs.
