Decorating your house doesn't have to be expensive

The ultimate rule is to surround with yourself things that light up your house and make you look forward to going back home each day. It doesn’t have to be the most expensive leather seats or the biggest flat-screen television.

HOMES & CONSTRUCTIONS

Decorating a house is a very personal and intimate thing that should be given full attention and time. Very often, people think that decorating requires a lot of money in terms of hiring the best interior designer.

Rose Gitta an internal designer says interior decoration is an art that is best brought out by the person, who is going to live in the house or room.

She says only you can best describe what your favourite colours are and what things you would love to include in your living area.

"Of course, I am not saying that the interior decorator cannot do this on your behalf, but rather that art and design are best expressed on a personal level", she says.

Agnes Kiddamwalime another interior designer says the impression you get from a person's living area can tell you a lot about the character of the person.

"So many people spend a lot of time on their body appearance, but if you see where they live, you would be very surprised", she says.

Gitta goes on to say that anyone can have a beautiful home without spending a lot of money, all they have to do is be a little creative.

Some people think they have to live in a big house to decorate it, but it starts right where you are, in that one-roomed house.

The ultimate rule is to surround with yourself things that light up your house and make you look forward to going back home each day. It doesn't have to be the most expensive leather seats or the biggest flat-screen television, but simple pretty things like a vase of freshly picked flowers or a beautifully-painted pot in a corner or even that photograph with friends in a lovely photo frame.

Candles also add that personal touch to a room, especially if they are in a colour that blends well with the walls, curtains or anything else in the room.

Kiddamwalime says burning candles have a very relaxing and calming effect and they make a home feel warm and cosy.

Candles these days come in a variety of colours and are not expensive at all yet can be used to add definition to any room. They come in ranges of scented candles, unscented, oil candles, floating candles and many others.

These go for as low as sh1,000 and as much as sh50,000. These can be bought from different shops in Kampala.

You can also get beautiful art crafts made out of local materials that do not cost an arm and a leg. Things like little baskets that come in different colours can be placed on a table.

A beautiful potted-plant, whose flowers have a resemblance to the main colours on your wall or curtains, is another simple way to enhance the beauty of a room. Potted-plants not only add beauty to a room but can also increase the air circulation of a room and an aerated room will earn you marks over a stuffy room.

Anything beautiful can be transformed into an amazing piece of art. So, feel free to stock those candles in pink, purple and any other colour that takes your fancy.
