This was handed over by the chancellor of Kampala Archdiocese, Fr Dr Pius Male Ssentubwe, who represented the Archbishop of Kampala, Dr Cyprian Kizito Lwanga, at St Peter's Catholic Parish premises at Nsambya recently.

Among those who benefitted are people from the Democratic Republic of Congo, South Sudan and Sudan.

During the handover of the relief items and rent fees, the Ministry of Health guidelines, including social distance, wearing of facemasks were followed.

However, refugees who reside in Mengo-Kisenyi and other places also benefitted on same programme.

Ssentubwe said Kampala Archdiocese together with Caritas Justice and Peace Commission in collaboration with the Urban Refugee Commission working with the United Nations High Commission for Refugees and the Office of the Prime Minister had instituted emergency assistance measures with support from the diocese of Rottenburg, Germany for the urban refugees.

Ssentubwe said in Kampala Archdiocese they had many refugees who are renting houses.

The refugees thanked the donors for the kind gesture.

Urban refugees' livehood, especially in Kampala and Wakiso districts is presently severely affected by the lockdown restrictions due to the pandemic.

Fr Cyprian Masembe, the co-ordinator of Justice and Peace in Kampala Archdiocese, said: "We have seen that providing money for rent cash and these items is one of the best ways to address refugees' basic needs here in Kampala and Wakiso."
