Uganda's COVID-19 infection rate slows down to 8 new cases

Uganda registered a slow COVID-19 infection rate on Wednesday as the country announced only eight new cases from the 2,423 cases samples tested a day earlier.

This is the first time this month the country is recording such a low rate, with most of the daily statistics showing more than 10 new cases.

A statement from the Ministry of Health said: "Four new cases were among 1,388 samples tested from points of entry (truck drivers) while four were among the 1,035 samples of alerts and contacts."

According to the ministry, three truck drivers arrived from South Sudan via Elegu while one came through Mutukula from Tanzania.

The ministry also said the contacts cases were from Kyotera (two), Kayunga (one) and Amuru (one) districts.

"All confirmed cases are Ugandans. The total confirmed COVID-19 cases in Uganda is now 665," the ministry added.

About 31 foreign truck drivers - 16 Kenyans, eight Tanzanians, five Eritreans, one Burundian and one South Sudanese tested positive at points of entry and were handed over to their countries of origin.

"To-date, Uganda has registered a total of 119 recoveries and no COVID-19 related death," the state said.
