Rally star Lubega tips FMU on safety

With the motorsport activities set to resume after the final lifting of the COVID-18 lockdown, the Federation of Motorsport Clubs of Uganda (FMU) has been advised to involve competitors in managing safety during competitions.

The 2019 Clubman Rally champion Ibrahim Lubega popularly known as "Pasuwa" in an interview with New Vision said competitors have bigger followings, which believes and respects them than the federation.

"FMU does not have fans. Drivers have fans because we entertain them and they believe in us. So FMU has to involve us so that we talk to our fans on matters of safety," Lubega said.

"I also want to appeal to fellow drivers to join the safety marshals in controlling the fans during events," he added.

His views were supported by UMOSPOC safety delegate Moses Ssekungu who said fans are very loyal to their drivers than other officials.

Ssekungu  also added that more training workshops like the one UMOSPOC held last year and that of FMU should be regular, despite not being the best solution to the current safety challenges in Uganda.

They further urged fans to read and understand the rules and regulations governing the sport so that they are able to know areas they are allowed in and those they should not.
