The opposition party Uganda People's Congress (UPC) has commended the Government for the valid intervention measures to protect citizens against COVID-19 ‘onslaught'.

Lawrence Okae, the UPC National Chairman noted that the internal measures are working well and protecting the citizens.

"Government should get to redouble her efforts now that we are coming to critical stages of managing this monster," Okae said on Friday.

He, however, implored the Government to consider a double-check at the Country's borders to ensure that only drivers whose results consistently conform with the international specifications are the only ones allowed to enter the country.

Okae said a strict border check should be considered to prevent the transborder crossing of long-distance truck drivers that are the major cause of COVID-19 transmission.

"So far the registered cases depict an increase in imported COVID-19. Just on Thursday, the Government statistics at Entebbe COVID-19 Management Centre indicated 11 new positive cases of Kenyans and Tanzanians truck drivers," Okae said.

"This sends a big worry to the country since our internally detected cases are gradually and increasingly falling down to the extent that last week, we never recorded internal cases," Okae added.

UPC further suggested that the surveillance that has been developed for internal management of COVID-19 should also apply to all border entry points.
