WITCHCRAFT WARNING

At least 11 houses in Kanyamiyaga village, Mpeefu sub-county in Kagadi district have been burnt to ashes under unclear circumstances.

Residents accused one of their neighbours of being the source of the fire because of his involvement in witchcraft.

The residents now say they have nothing to eat and are sleeping in the cold.

A security team led by the Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Lillian Ruteraho, rushed to the area to quell the situation as the residents threatened to lynch the suspect.

Ruteraho asked them to shun witchcraft tendencies as the country grapples with COVID-19.

"The country is fighting COVID-19 and now you are bringing in witchcraft. These tendencies must stop forthwith because they are counter-productive," said Ruteraho.

She warned residents against mob action.

"You will commit mob justice as a group but when you are arrested, you will answer charges individually," Ruteraho warned.

Ruteraho ordered all residents to stay in their homes and be vigilant.
