Two Lira fire victims referred to Mulago

Jimmy Edem, 26, a driver by profession and resident of Ayito village in Amac sub county, Lira district who suffered extensive burns was same day referred to Mulago in critical condition while Emmanuel Okot, 32, from Lamwo who suffered what doctors said is 54% burns has also been referred to Mulago.

Two people who suffered serious injuries in the Friday morning fire that engulfed two lorries in Lira have been referred to National Referral Hospital Mulago.

Jimmy Edem, 26, a driver by profession and resident of Ayito village in Amac sub county, Lira district who suffered extensive burns was same day referred to Mulago in critical condition while Emmanuel Okot, 32, from Lamwo who suffered what doctors said is 54% burns has also been referred to Mulago.

Edem was taking his brother Benedict Egwel, 32, for treatment in Lira town and both sustained injuries.

Most of the victims are traders from Lamwo and Kitgum districts who had come to transact business at Amach Market in Lira and were on their way back home when the incident happened at a traffic police check point in Adwila on Lira - Soroti highway.

Lamwo and Kitgum district leaders dispatched ambulances to transport the injured back to nearby hospitals for proper attention.

Another ambulance from Kitgum transported Emmanuel Okot to Mulago.

George Okot, the chairperson of Acholi community in Lira said in all, they have transported 29 victims back to Kitgum where they can be attended to easily by their relatives.

Okot said residents of Lira contributed sh2m to help the victims and he has given all of them a share.

Witnesses said the accident happened when two Fuso lorries loaded with merchandise including (inclusive of local gin) were stopped at intervals at the police check point for overloading.

One of the lorries passed too close to the other rubbing against the jerry cans supposedly containing local gin, tied on the sides of the lorries making the volatile liquid to spill, sparking a fire that exploded and burnt the two lorries and all merchandise on board.

As the fire exploded, a woman identified as Susan Aciro, 25, from Lamwo threw her baby out of the vehicle before she jumped out and broke her legs, the baby however survived unhurt.

Police said they had not yet established the amount of merchandise destroyed but witnesses said five cows died and assorted merchandise worth millions of shillings was burnt. Some victims also lost their money.

The victims have been identified as; Jimmy Edem, 26, from Amach in Lira, Emmanuel Okot, 32, from Lamwo, both transferred to Mulago in critical conditions.

Others are, Peter Ocia, 45, Denis Acuru, 29, from Kitgum, Susan Aciro, 25, Margaret Auma, 41, Sandra Apio, 21, Janet Atoo, 37, Maurine Aleng, Rose Okot, Nester Adoch, 32, Grace Lakot, 29, and Rose Acan, 45.

Other victims are, Patrick Komakech, 21, Irene Akwero, 31, Grace Achola, 29, Michael Oyet, 27, Benedict Egwel, 32, Collin |Akwao, 37, Kevin Abalo, 42, Betty Adongo, 37, Susan Auma, 24, Ruth Okot, Joy Acen, Apiyo Sunday, and Cement Aliao, 37.
