Character Is like pregnancy, you cannot hide it - Jacinta Asaba

Mar 11, 2020

I spent my Valentine's Day with my family. Since it was a working day and the children were in school, I picked them from school, so that we could celebrate the day as a family.

Jacinta Asaba is a Programme Producer and Film Director. Cissy Apiso caught up with her about how she juggles work and Love.

HOW DID YOU SPEND YOUR VALENTINE'S DAY?
I spent my Valentine's Day with my family. Since it was a working day and the children were in school, I picked them from school, so that we could celebrate the day as a family.

We spent the evening together, just enjoying the hills and the breeze at a hotel in Kampala.

ARE YOU IN A RELATIONSHIP?
Yes, I am married, with four children.

HOW DID THE TWO OF YOU MEET?
Mine was sent from God. I did not expect it to happen soon because I was still busy building my career in television. It was one Sunday evening, as I was coming back from visiting my brother. I saw a car parked in my landlord's compound.

I passed by, since I did not expect to know anyone, but as I walked ahead, I heard someone calling my name. At fi rst I did not answer, but when he called me the third time, I looked back and that was the
beginning and the end of my story.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN TOGETHER?
We have been together for 16 years and still counting.

WHAT HAS KEPT THE FIRE BURNING IN YOUR MARRIAGE?
The things you do from the beginning that make it a good relationship must not burn down.

There is need for reassurance for each other and keeping it fresh all the time, to keep the fire burning.

DO YOU CELEBRATE YOUR ANNIVERSARY?
I am always looking forward to celebrating my anniversary because it falls on a special day in the church calendar. It is the day of St. Francis of Assisi.

So, prayers on that day are a must, followed by a private time with close family and friends.

HOW DO YOU BALANCE YOUR WORK AND PERSONAL LIFE?
I value both my work and personal life. I am an introvert, although work is where I spend most of my time, it is also a place, which brings out the best in me.

I live a private life and I do not like exposing my private life.

DO YOU THINK THE PAST MATTERS IN A RELATIONSHIP?
Absolutely, especially the good old days. There is no better way to protect a relationship than thinking about the past. The good past reminds you of how you can enjoy your relationship, while the bad memories teach you how best to handle the challenges.

IS IT OKAY TO TELL LIES IN A RELATIONSHIP?
As a Christian, I don't believe in telling lies. It is important to be truthful to yourself and your partner in a relationship.

The moment you start telling lies, that is the beginning of your downfall. Character is like pregnancy, you cannot hide it.

You will not hide for long because the truth will come out soon.

WHY DO SOME PEOPLE STAY IN RELATIONSHIPS THAT ARE TOXIC?
Well, it is simple, staying in a toxic relationship is a sacrifice. There are so many things that people make sacrifi ce for.

For instance their children. How about the energy and hard work you put into building the relationship. When you go back to the African traditional values, a married woman was much more respected than the unmarried ones. Before breaking up, one should think about at least five priorities or reasons why they valued that relationship.

THERE ARE MANY MARRIAGES BREAKING UP TODAY. WHAT ADVICE DO YOU GIVE THAT PERSON PLANNING TO WALK AWAY FROM THEIR MARRIAGE?
Look back at the day you two the circumstances through which you two came together to become husband and wife. Seek guidance and counselling, but most of all, go back again to the list of things you consider most important in your relationship.

In most cases, whenever you discuss your relationship issues with someone, remember they may wish to be in your position or they may wish you move out so that you join their bandwagon. So, listen to your heart and always make sacrifices, especially if it involves children.
