St Lawrence's coach confident of winning University League title

St Lawrence coach Davis Nnono Ssozi believes his team will be able to go all way to the final of the Pepsi University Football League.

Ssozi was speaking ahead of the St. Lawrence home tie against Bishop Stuart University at Kavule on Thursday.

This is St. Lawrence's fourth season in the league and they have established themselves as a powerhouse.

They reached the finals last season, but lost to Uganda Christian University. In 2018, they finished second runners-up after beating Bugema University in the third-place play-off.

"As you can see, every season we have been improving. In 2018, we finished third. Last season we were second. This season, we believe we shall lift the trophy," Nnono said.

But first, they will have to negotiate past a tricky group stage. St. Lawrence is drawn in the group of death together with two time former champions MUBS and last year's quarter-finalists YMCA.

"The format of play this year is a bit tricky. You have to finish top of the table to be sure of making it to the group stage, and ours is the toughest group with MUBS and YMCA. We shall give it our best and I know at the end of the day, we shall make it out of the group," Ssozi said.

"The team remains largely unchanged from last season. We just have two additions in defender Bashir Asiku and goalkeeper Lawrence Kimera. The rest of the squad is intact although we have a few injuries and some might not play tomorrow," Nnono added.

Bishop Stuart is in their fourth season in the league as well, however, their story is quite different from St. Lawrence's. Last season, they lost all their games finishing at the bottom of their group and this season coach Sengabi Idirisa is determined to do better.

"The team didn't do well last season as we lost all our games. But that is now history. This is a new season and we are prepared to do much better," Sengabi said.

"St. Lawrence will be a tough team to play moreover at home, but football is football and I believe we can get a good result," Sengabi stated.
