Katende flags off the team

The Cricket Cranes were flagged off for their tour of Qatar and India on Friday at the National Council of Sports (NCS) by the assistant general secretary David Katende.

He was joined by Uganda Cricket Association CEO Martin Ondeko as the team was given encouragement ahead of the various competitions in Asia.

The team will embark on a bumper international schedule that is tailor made to expose the much younger players to international cricket.

"It's a good thing for the young players to get games like this playing against tough opposition, so it's a good chance for them to put their hands up and tell the selectors this is what we can do," Team Captain Brian Masaba.

They have taken members of the senior team along who will stay in Qatar, while the young men go to India.

The three T20 games in Qatar are ICC approved and that will give the team an opportunity to improve on their ranking.

"We know there is no substitute for game time. We are glad for the opportunity to play more games ahead of the bumper year for us," Masaba explained.

This is also be the first match the interim head coach Davis Turinawe will take charge of as the Uganda Cricket Association is actively looking for a new national team coach ahead of the world challenge league group B tournament in Kampala in July.

Turinawe will be assisted by Jackson Ogwang. Brian Mark Masaba will captain the side with Arnold Otwani continuing in his vice-captaincy role. The delegation will be led by Uganda Cricket Association Chairman Bashir Badu Ansasiira together with the CEO Martin Ondeko, for Qatar and India respectively who will be looking to tap into more partnerships with other franchises and set-ups, on what will be a working tour for them.
