Tooro Club's Isiah Mwesige believes he is ready to win his first major on home soil as the 20th edition of the Venus Open tees off at Tooro Golf Club on Saturday.

Mwesigye, 24, who plays off handicap 4, last won a major in Fort Portal during the Tusker Malt Lager Series in 2018 but is confident his recent work on the course with the help of professional golfer Ronald Rugumayo, will see him come top again.

"I have been training hard for it with the help of my mentor Rugumayo and I believe his tips will help me win it. He has been giving me tips on how I can win big tournaments," Mwesige said.

"The good thing it has been raining and the course is in good shape meaning we shall enjoy better greens,"

The biggest challenge for Mwesige will come from a club mate and national team captain Joseph Cwinya-ai who last year dominated the local scene winning four majors and two international tournaments with the national team and is the defending champion.

"I'm one hundred percent prepared to defend this title. I thought we would play it in dry conditions but we have had some bit of rain and the course is in very good condition," Cwinya-ai said.

"I'm good and I'm going to use this as a precursor to the Kitante Open next week which I also want to win. I want to exceed what I achieved last year, so I'm prepared for nay one that crosses my path," Cwinya-ai who shot 7-under 63 during practice on Thursday stated.

With Emmanuel Jakisa who last won a tournament at the club away in the states, the onus will be left to the likes of Denis Asaba who is still nursing wounds inflicted on him by thugs at his home about three weeks ago.

The one-day medal format of play tournament is expected to attract golfers from other clubs across the country including those from sister clubs in Kasese and Mbarara.
