ENVIRONMENTAL CONSERVATION

KAMPALA - The aim of the Running Out Of Trees (ROOT) campaign is as clear as daylight: save the environment by planting more trees.

It is no doubt that Uganda is running out of trees through deforestation.

Uganda Breweries Limited (UBL) is stamping its foot hard on the ground to say 'Enough is enough!'.

Ahead of the National Day of Tree Planting due on April 25, UBL has organised a crosscountry relay marathon dubbed ROOT Run to raise awareness on the need for every Ugandan to take the lead in the conservation of the environment.

The two-day marathon will get under way on Friday at Parliament in Kampala and end in Gulu. It will feature both professional and volunteer runners.

This year's National Day of Tree Planting is themed: 40 Million trees in 8 hours, and requires every Ugandan to plant at least one tree.

On Monday, ahead of the relay marathon, Kampala Hash Harriers launched the run at the UBL headquarters in Luzira.

Participants convened at the brewer's head office for a fun run around the area.

Partnering with UBL in the campaign are New Vision, Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA), Total Uganda and Stanbic Bank.
