MPIGI - A three-storeyed building at Herm Junior School located in Kalagala ward, Mpigi town council, collapsed due to heavy rains that ravaged the area on Wednesday evening.

According to residents, the building was still under construction and works were taking place both day and night.

On visiting the scene, Police from Mpigi Central Police Station led by the officer in charge of the station, Erias Twesigye were met with resistance from the school administrators who locked the school gate.

The site engineer and other workers fled the scene on seeing the police. Twesigye said police are hunting for the site engineer because they suspect shoddy work as the cause.

"We have started our investigations which may lead to the arrest of the site engineer and some members of the school administration," he said.

It is not yet clear whether there are people still trapped under the rubble. However, residents neighbouring the school noted that there were over 20 people working at the site.

According to Twesigye, no student was injured because the building was still under construction but plans are underway to search for people who might be trapped under the debris.

Similarly, in June this year, the rooftop of the Mpigi district administration block was blown off during the heavy rainfall, which also affected most parts of the district.
