THE INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR OLDER PERSONS

1.0 Introduction and background

On 14 December 1990, the United Nations General Assembly under resolution 45/106 designated 1st October the International Day of Older Persons. The International Day of Older Persons was observed for the fi rst time throughout the world on October 1st 1991 and Uganda started commemorating the day in 1999.

2.0 Why International Day of Older Persons

The purpose is to recognize the contributions made by Older Persons and to create awareness on the rights and needs of older persons. Furthermore, this is the day Government and other stakeholders take stock of what has been achieved, the gaps and possible solutions to address the challenges that remain.

3.0 Theme & venue

The theme for this year is "Economic Empowerment of Older Persons: The Road to Financial Independence." This theme has been selected to take stock of the achievements that have been made by the various interventions aimed at addressing challenges that older persons face, and to refl ect on how those that remain can be addressed. The venue for the national celebrations is Boma Ground, Kumi Municipality, Kumi District. The choice of the venue is strategic; the district is one of the districts that have just been enrolled on to the Senior Citizens Grants Programme. CLICK HERE FOR MORE ON THIS NOTICE
