Emmanuel Okwi scored on his debut as Uganda Cranes captain in an international friendly against Kenya which ended 1-1 at Moi International stadium Kasarani in the capital Nairobi.

The 25-year-old Okwi who recently put ink to paper with Egyptian top-flight side Al Ltthad from Tanzania Giants Simba was handed the captaincy by interim coach Abdullah Mubiru after regular captain and goalkeeper Denis Onyango pulled out of the squad to face Kenya due to personal issues.

Okwi scored for the Cranes in the 24 minute before Gor Mahia skipper Kenneth Muguna leveled matters for the home side in the 51 minutes of the second half.

KCCA FC custodian who started in goal for Uganda made a couple of saves to deny debutant Kenyan coach Francis Kimanzi's side a win.

This was Mubiru's third game since he took over from departed coach Sebastien Desabre last July.

Uganda was using the friendly to prepare for the African Nations Championships CHAN2020 qualifiers against Burundi and the two fixtures in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations against Burkina Faso and Malawi in November this year.
