Invest in bonds, Mbayo tells Ugandans in UAE

The Minister further implored Ugandans in the UAE to be more patriotic and sensitized the Diaspora to offer allegiance to their motherland. The minister stressed the importance of being noble to ones’ country.

The Minister for the Presidency, Esther Mbayo has encouraged Ugandans working and living in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), to invest in stock securities and government bonds, to be sure of their savings in the future.

Mbayo was addressing Ugandans in the UAE at the 1st Diaspora Ugandan Awareness Workshop (DUAW) held at the Sheraton Excellexior Hotel-Deira city, Dubai held on 22nd and 23rd of August 2019.

Mbayo added: "Patriotism is having strong affection, royalty, and connection with your own country''. In addition, Mbayo cautioned the Diaspora against investing in property which hasn't been inspected and urged them to always conduct due diligence on the legal ownership of any land back home before purchasing it.

 
"Make good use of the instituted system of verifying land titles with the ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development, since all the necessary information has been compiled and available on the Land Management Information System (LIMS) in reference to any land property within the country.

Mbayo, also lamented over the increasing rate on the cases of fraud against Ugandans especially those living in the Diaspora, when they come home to purchase land, hence pleaded with them to be more vigilant before they buy such property and identify the true rightful owners before they are duped into illegal titles in guise of them being genuine.

In her concluding remarks, Minister Mbayo said the government is doing everything possible through bilateral agreements into securing and guaranteeing their safety and security as they work in the UAE.

The Commissioner Winston Katushabe from the Ministry of Works and Transport emphasized the need to empower the Minister to make regulations: To prescribing conditions and procedures for recognition and conversion of driving licences to harmonize the classes of foreign driving licences with the Uganda driver licensing regime.

 

Retest for a person applying for the first renewal of a driving license: This will require all people renewing their permits for the first time to undergo retesting for competency including eye tests in order to improve driver quality. But for those living in the diaspora once they obtain a Uganda drivers' license, it would work as an international permit.

The Commissioner for Debts and Bonds from the Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development, encouraged the diaspora to invest in the Diaspora Bond.

 
The two-day workshop is followed successively with two workshops scheduled to be held in London-UK and Chicago-USA on the 25th August and 28th August to 2nd September 2019 respectively.

The DUAWs is a government pro-active programme, through which government Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) extend their respective services to Ugandans in the Diaspora in appreciation of their continued remittance of funds that has boosted the economy of the country at large.
